THE EARTH "WILL BE BURNED UP"

When we read that title, what immediately comes to mind is a nuclear war. In the times of Bible writers such a thing was unimaginable - unless God gave them the vision!

This is what the Bible has to say in 2 Peter 3:10

"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up."

The world knows what happened in 1945 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the atom bomb was dropped. It was a firestorm of terrible proportions. The nuclear bombs of today are even more powerful, and the quote above surely refers to the intensity of such a bomb. Only such a weapon could make the "elements melt with fervent heat" on such a vast scale. The world right now is a powderkeg, especially in the Middle East. Several nations have nuclear bombs - China, Israel, India, Pakistan, North Korea. So does the United States, and Iran is a threat in this arms race too.

So when we consider all this, it does seem that the Bible forecast given above very much resembles what would happen in a nuclear war.

The technology for causing mass human misery is in place now - and weapons such as those used by Saddam Hussain on his own people are available too - poison gas and chemical weapons that have an awful effect on people. They were not found in Iraq, but history records they were used by Saddam against the Kurds.

Nuclear wars - even conventional wars - are started by people filled with hatred, greed, a lust for power and for controlling others. The same applies to "ethnic cleansing" which incorporates murder on a huge scale. No person who is born again by the spirit of God would do such things.

Change begins in the human heart, with the individual, and that is why Jesus came to this world to begin that process through the great salvation He offers. Though not seen in the flesh now, His mission is still the same. Will you turn to Him?
